Journaling with God: 10 Prompts to Strengthen Your Faith

When we invite God into our journaling, something shifts. Journaling becomes more than just dumping all our words and feelings on paper; it becomes a dialogue, a quiet place where the Holy Spirit whispers and your soul finally exhales.

If you’re craving a deeper connection with God (like me) but are unsure where to begin…let’s start here together.

So grab your pen, your journal, and a little faith.

Here are 10 journaling prompts that have helped me deepen my conversations with God and feel heard in the quietest moments. Use them as a starting point. Take your time and let the Holy Spirit speak between the lines.

God, where are You in this season of my life?

Sometimes, we don’t even realize we’re in a spiritual decline until we put pen to paper. This prompt invites honesty and sometimes even comfort.

What have You been trying to teach me lately that I haven’t been listening to?

God is so gentle with us. He’s been repeating Himself out of love, not frustration. Let this prompt be a moment of surrender.

What does Your love for me really look like, God?

So many of us know God loves us, but we don’t feel it. So ask Him to show you, personally, how He loves you. Then, write what you sense.

God, what do You want me to go of?

Bitterness? Pride? Shame? The timeline you built without Him? Sometimes, letting go is the most intimate act of faith.

How can I hear You more clearly?

This prompt will open you up to learning the language of God in your life, whether through scripture, stillness, nature, or other means.

Remind me of who I am in You.

When the world labels us, remember God re-names us. Use this space to listen for His truth about your identity, not what life has tried to label you as.

What is one area I need healing in today, Lord?

Not last year, not last week, not the trauma you’ve already processed. Today. Sometimes, God wants to do fresh work in a hidden place we’ve overlooked.

What does obedience look like for me right now?

Obedience can feel heavy, but God has the answers. It often brings clarity and peace. Let Him define that step for you, not religion, and definitely not fear.

God, show me what You’re doing in the waiting.

This prompt is for the in-between moments, the unanswered prayers, and the quieter seasons. Let this be a place of building trust and expectancy.

Write a letter to God…and then let Him respond.

You can start with “Dear God…” and then just let the words flow out. Then flip the page and write what you imagine He would say in return. You’ll be surprised how His voice finds you when you make space for it.

Journaling with God isn’t about being perfect but about being present with Him.

You don’t need the right words. You just need a willing heart and a moment to listen. Let these prompts become sacred meeting places between you and the one who knows you best.

If you found this helpful, consider printing these prompts and creating a “Talking with God” section in your notebook, or even using one prompt a week for the next 10 weeks to go at a slower pace!

However you choose, God is ready to meet you on the page.

Let’s go deeper, one page at a time.
