Healing from the Past
Letting God Mend Your Heart After Pain
We all carry wounds from a moment in our past.
These moments of judgment, betrayal, loss, rejection, or deep disappointment, are wounds that don’t just disappear with time and have shaped how we see ourselves, others, and even God. The world tells us to move on, let it go, shove it to the back of our minds, or even seek closure through external means that lead to a negative habit or two.
But the truth to healing is diving inward to do some soul-level restoration and allow God to work in us.
Healing with God is different because He doesn’t just pick up the broken pieces and tape them back together, He renews, restores, and transforms you. Inviting God into our pain doesn’t just comfort us but offers freedom from the wounds that weigh on our souls!
So let’s walk through 4 steps that will help you surrender your pain, replace lies with truth, and build a habit of healing through faith!
Surrendering Your Pain to God
The first step to healing is to surrender, and give it to God. We often carry pain like heavy weights, convinced we need to fix ourselves first before coming to God. But He invites us to come as we are!
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
-Matthew 11:28
How do we surrender?
Be honest with God about your pain. Pray openly, without filters.
Write a letter to God, releasing the hurt and asking Him to take control
Practice letting go daily because some wounds take time and that’s okay
When we hand all of our pain over to God, we make room for Him and create space with His love, peace, and healing!
Replacing Lies with God’s Truth
Let’s try to replace negative talk with positive talk using affirmations from Scripture for healing!
Here are a few starter verses to replace the lies you may be believing:
Lie: “I am broken and I will never be fixed.”
Truth: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” -Psalm 34:18
Lie: “I am not worthy of love.”
Truth: “I have loved you with an everlasting love.” -Jeremiah 31:3
Lie: “I will never heal from this pain.”
Truth: “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” -Psalm 147:3
Speak these truths over yourself daily. Write them down somewhere you’ll remember to look. Post them on your mirror! Let God’s Word reshape how you see yourself
Walking in Forgiveness (For yourself & Others)
Forgiveness is one of the hardest parts of healing, but it’s also one of the most freeing! It’s not about excusing the pain or pretending it didn’t happen, it’s about releasing the grip that pain has on you!
“Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievene against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”
-Colossians 3:13
What do you need to forgive? Maybe it’s a friend, a parent, a partner, or even yourself. Holding onto resentment only deepens the wound. Forgiveness is a process, and it’s okay if it takes time…
But take the first step today!
Ways to start:
Pray for those who hurt you (even when you don’t feel like it)
Write their name down and ask God to help you release the bitterness
Forgive yourself! God’s grace is big enough for your mistakes too
Building a Healing Habit with Prayer & Scripture
Remember healing takes time, it’s not a one-time event, it’s going to be a journey. The key here is to develop habits that allow God’s presence to be a daily part of your healing process.
Here’s how you can build a healing habit:
Morning Devotions:
Start your day with a verse about healing and meditate on it. You can even refer to the 10 Faith-Based Self-Care Habits For Your Mind & Soul
Prayer Journaling:
Write your prayers and reflections- document your growth and progress!
Worship:
Play worship music that speaks life over your situation
Accountability:
Find a trusted friend, mentor, or church group to walk with you
“He sent out His word and healed them; He rescued them from the grave.”
-Psalm 107:20
The more you immerse yourself deeper in God’s Word, the more you will experience His healing!
