10 Faith-Based Self-Care Habits For Your Mind & Soul

Let’s be real

Life can feel overwhelming

Between work, school, family, and responsibilities, self-care often falls in between the cracks and most of the time out of sight

But self-care isn’t just about the lavish bubble baths and spa days (although those are great too). It’s about making sure your mind, heart, and soul are nourished- especially during these undeserving times.

For those leaning hard on faith, self-care isn’t just about feeling good either, it’s about staying connected to God and finding His peace and His presence

It’s why making space for self-care truly matters.

So to help you out, I’ve listed 10 simple, faith-based self-care habits that will help you feel more grounded, refreshed, and spiritually fulfilled WITHOUT overcomplicating things:

  1. Start Your Day with Prayer & Gratitude

Before you get the urge to check your email, social media, or text messages. Put God first and thank him for waking you up this morning, for another day, or just to be ALIVE!

Even if it’s just a quick, “ God, thank You for today. Please guide me and give me peace!” Can really make all the difference!

  2. Read OR Listen to Scripture

You do NOT have to sit for an hour reading the Bible every morning to create the bond we seek with God. Just reading one verse, can be enough to shift your mindset!

If reading isn’t your thing, don't worry, God has many other ways of getting your attention. Try listening to a devotional podcast or audio Bible! Either way you chose God’s Word has a way of speaking directly to what you need, exactly when you need it.

  3. Put on Worship Music

Do you have any idea how powerful music is? A good worship song can change your entire mood, lift your spirit, and remind you of God’s presence. So blast it in your car, while you are cleaning, or when you feel the urge too!

Keep it simple, it’s just another way to stay connected to God throughout your day.

  4. Rest (Like, really rest)

We live in a culture that depends on being busy! But God commands us to rest. Taking a sabbath (whether it’s Sunday or another day ) isn’t lazy, it’s what what God intended. So take it slow, unwind, and spend time with family and loved ones.

Just be… and feel refreshed and renewed!

  5. Keep a Faith Journal

If you enjoy writing just as much as I do (and possibly a mind that never stops running), then writing is another great option. Write out prayers, thoughts, things you are grateful for, or just a place to vent all your concerns and worries onto paper. Whatever you choose to write about this space is between you and God. The best part of keeping a journal is having the opportunity to look back and see how much you grew with yourself and with God

  6. Serve Others (Without Overwhelming yourself)

I know sometimes it almost feels your expectations to meet others needs are the top of your priority list. But just know it can be as simple as texting someone to check in on them or being a little bold by helping a neighbor or just praying for a friend in need. It’s the Act of Kindness that is needed to fill your soul!

  7. Speak Life Over Yourself

    Remember to give yourself grace!

We can be so hard on ourselves at times, but God calls us fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). Let’s try and reframe from focusing on what is wrong and speak truth over ourselves saying the right things our minds rejoice to like

I am loved,” “God is with me”, “I am capable,"

    Because afterall you are…

  8. Try a Fast (Doesn’t Have to Be food!)

Fasting is a way to refocus on God! It doesn’t have to be food to accomplish that. You can fast from pretty much anything, such as social media, TV, negative self-talk, and even SUGAR!

The idea is to remove any distractions and spend that extra time drawing closer to God.

  9. Get Outside & Breathe

In my opinion, this is something that everyone should make a habit in their self-care routine. Nature is one of God’s greatest gifts and we have the pleasure of having that alongside us every day. Take a walk, sit in the sun, or just breathe in some fresh air!

Just 5 min of your time can reset your mood and remind you of God’s presence in all his creation!

  10. End the Day with Prayer & Reflection

Before bed, take a moment and reflect on the day. Ask yourself some of these questions:

    What went well today?

    Where did you see God?

What do you need to let go of?

Give your worries all to God, thank Him for the day, and rest knowing He’s got you covered.

Final Thoughts

Self-care doesn’t have to be complicated. Its really meant to be simple, intentional, an opportunity to reconnect to God, and care for your body, mind, and soul!

You don’t need a perfect morning routine to connect with God and yourself.

Just your presence

Start small and remember that God is with you!
