Why Do We Feel Distant From God?
There are seasons in life when we feel spiritually dry when prayer feels empty, the scripture doesn’t vibe with us, and God, well, seems distant. It’s these moments that can be discouraging, even isolated but here’s the truth:
God has not moved.
We just need to reawaken our hearts to His presence!
Spiritual dryness can happen for many reasons- busyness, stress, doubt, exhaustion, you name it! But the good news, seasons of dryness are an opportunity for renewal. Let's walk through some powerful ways to reconnect with God when He feels far away.
Step 1: Identifying the Source of Spiritual Dryness
Before you can move forward, take a moment to reflect:
Am I too busy for God? Distractions and responsibilities can be one reason for your time with God seems minimal to none.
Am I holding on to guilt or shame? Sometimes the truth can be a reason we avoid time with God
Am I relying too much on emotions? Faith is not a feeling, it’s a relationship. Even when we don’t “feel” close to God, He is still present.
Am I in a season of hardship? Pain and disappointment can make it hard to sense God’s love, but He is still working.
Spend time journaling or praying over these questions. Clarity is the first step toward renewal.
Step 2: Returning to Prayer & Honest Conversation with God
When you feel distant from God, your instinct might be to withdraw further. Instead, do the opposite-Press in through Prayer!
Pray Honestly. Tell God exactly how you feel. He welcomes your doubts, frustrations, and fears.
Pray Consistently. Even when it feels like He’s silent, commit to daily conversation with Him.
Pray with Expectancy. Trust that He is listening and will respond in His perfect timing.
If you don’t know where to start, begin with Psalm 42:11- “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God.”
Step 3: Reconnecting with Scripture to Renew Your Mind
God’s Word is our anchor when our emotions waver. Even if reading the Bible feels dry, keep showing up.
Start with Psalms- they are raw, honest, and FULL of God’s promises.
Meditate on Isaiah 41:10- “ Do not fear, for am I with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.”

Even if you read just one verse a day, God’s Word will begin to nourish your spirit again!
Step 4: Taking Faith-Based Action to Strengthen Your Relationship
Faith isn’t just about feeling close to God-it’s about living in His presence, even when it’s hard.
Here are some ways to actively grow in your faith:
Worship: Play worship music and sing, even when you don’t feel like it. Worship shifts our focus back to God.
Serve: Sometimes, spiritual refreshment comes when we pour into others. Look for small ways to serve.
Join a Community: Find a Bible study, small group, or church to walk through this season with you.
Fast from Distractions: Social media, negativity, or anything stealing your focus from God- try stepping away for a while.
